Mario Batali and Sam Calagione Turn Food Waste into Beer

On the series premiere of “First We Feast Presents…That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It,” Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione teams up with culinary legend Mario Batali to brew a pruno —a fermented beverage typically associated with prison—that makes use of funky, unsellable produce from Eataly Chicago. The goal of their crazy experimental ale? To prove that brewers can join the cause to reduce America’s rampant food-waste epidemic.

Brought to you by “That’s Odd, Let’s Drink It” is a six-part series that explores that outer boundaries of experimental brewing. In each episode, Sam Calagione will create a never-before-seen beer inspired by an icon in another field—from NBA All-Star Chris Bosh, to rap star Mac Miller.
